47. Fredericton Marathon

The Fredericton Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the province of New Brunswick and has been taking place since 1979. Originally started with only a few hundred runners, it has developed into one of the most well-known marathons in the province. In 2012, the marathon served as the provincial championship in the half marathon and attracted over 1,300 runners. The marathon is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon, with 65 of the 166 finishers in 2012 achieving the qualifying time, the highest number in the province. The race takes place in mid-May, always one week before the Blue Nose Marathon in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Currently, the marathon is sponsored by Scotiabank and organized by the Capital City Road Runners Club in the city. In 2017, Canadian Running Magazine reported that the Fredericton Marathon has the highest rate of Boston qualifications in Canada, with over 30 percent of finishers achieving the time standard in 2017. The event offers various distances, including marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometers, 5 kilometers, as well as youth and children's races. The course starts and ends at Queen Square and runs over the Saint John River and along the Nashwaak River. The course is predominantly flat, providing ideal conditions for fast times.
