9. Glendalough Lap of the Gap Marathon

The Glendalough Lap of the Gap Marathon takes place on May 23, 2026, and is Ireland's only road marathon in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. The course of 42.2 km includes approximately 800 m of elevation gain and runs from Glendalough to Sallygap and back to Laragh. The event is organized by the local Glendalough Athletics Club and combines a professional structure with a family atmosphere. The first marathon of its kind seems to be regionally limited, yet past editions have earned it a reputation as a challenging yet spectacular route through dramatic, wild landscapes. In previous years, the weather around this time has usually ranged from mild to cool temperatures with changing conditions – ideal for ambitious runners. A lottery for registration is not known. The distance covers a total of about 800 m of elevation. The event also offers a half marathon (approximately 21 km, about 340 m of elevation) alongside the marathon. Each race promises scenic highlights such as the Glenmacnass Waterfall and Lough Tay (“Guinness Lake”) as well as the challenge of a hilly, mountainous course.
