64. Westenergie Marathon Essen

The Westenergie Marathon "Around the Baldeneysee" in Essen is Germany's oldest continuously held marathon – first held in 1963 and since then annually on the second Sunday in October. On October 11, 2026, the 64th edition of this traditional landscape marathon will take place – an event that, with its picturesque lakeside, volunteer-organized concept, and family atmosphere, is a true highlight of the season. The route runs twice around the Baldeneysee with an additional turnaround loop in the first lap, on consistently paved, flat terrain – ideal for both ambitious runners and leisure runners alike. In addition to the classic marathon (42.195 km), there is the Westenergie Seerunde (approx. 17 km) as well as the Allbau Team Relay Marathon (four runners share the full distance). The start and finish are located at the Seaside Beach near the regatta house; the route passes by scenic highlights such as bird protection areas, the Kampmann Bridge, and the white fleet on the lake – a perfect atmosphere for runners and their supporters.
